..I try not to get too philosophical around here but sometimes it is warranted. The reason Paul's death has affected many of us is two fold. First, he seemed like a genuinely nice guy who really loved cars and made some movies that struck a chord on some level. Second, his untimely death is a reminder that as gear heads we are dealing with dangerous machines and no matter how much we think we are in "control" accidents happen. Whether we are taking a ride in a friends car, going for a spirited drive, or the morning commute, everytime we turn that key there is an element of risk. Tragedies like this remind us of that risk.

I think the reason it affected so many of us is that alot of us grew up watching the films and they're part of the reason we became gearheads. I watched the shit out of the first two movies and they definitely molded me as an enthusiast.

Exactly. Driving is fun, but with all the other vehicles and lurking mechanical gremlins, at any time we each could face similar dangers.

I guess the thing that gets me is that this happens very often. Good, real people get killed in tragic car wrecks all the time. Car guys die at the wheel of their babies far too often. I am very, very sad that Paul has died, but as you said, it can be a reminder of how dangerous our passion is.

I know to a fact that I'm affected because in my impressionable days a youth I grew up watching Fast and Furious as almost a religious thing. It got me into cars plain and simple.

Him taking that role and embracing it and becoming a gear head we'd all aspire to (and some here might even currently be) was the cherry on top.

Life is fragile. It isn't short. It is fragile and it is cruel and it cares not for how good a person you are. At the very least Paul went doing what he found joy in, its nothing more than any of us could ask for.
